Sri Lanka tsunami aid deal signed - BBC News

Saturday, June 25, 2005
OPINION / COMMENT Reading this article and seen the picture placed together with the article brings me grief. Grief not because the Tsunami Aid Deal has been signed, but grief because things have come to such an extent that even Aid needs to be differenciated according to race. Why? Ok, so some may argue that this Aid Deal is signed with a rebel group which has been banned by countries such as the US and UK, but one should take into account that when the Tsunami struck, it didn't strike any community in particular - such as one race, one religion, one social status, one country! It affected people across the World! So does it really matter what colour, religion, country you come from? After all we're humans, we all have one thing in common, we all have the same colour underneath our skin. So may it be your worst enemy, I believe we should lend a hand and put all our differences aside. Giving Tsunami Aid, isn't giving power! Giving Aid is help, lending a hand, caring, loving, uniting! I wish peace prevails soon for Sri Lanka. Finally before I end, I wish the Aid Deal works out and with the help from both sides, that peace can be made into a reality. Let us all unite for a Better, Beautiful and Great Sri Lanka! LINK BBC NEWS | South Asia | Sri Lanka tsunami aid deal signed

Abstinence makes sperm lose edge - BBC News

Thursday, June 23, 2005
HEALTH NEWS "Men who abstain from sex thinking it will boost sperm quality and help them conceive are mistaken, a study shows. Waiting too long reduces their fathering power, particularly if they already have low sperm counts, the Israeli authors say. By looking at 1,800 semen samples from 900 men they found pausing from sex for no more than a day was best. The study, by Soroka University Hospital, was presented at a European fertility conference in Denmark. Lead researcher Dr Eliyaho Levitas said: "Some people abstain for weeks thinking that they are doing good." (BBC World News, 2005) LINK BBC NEWS | Health | Abstinence makes sperm lose edge

Avoiding soya 'may aid fertility' - BBC News

HEALTH NEWS "Women should avoid eating too much soya if they are trying for a baby, a UK fertility expert believes. A study in humans has shown a compound in soya called genistein sabotages the sperm as it swims towards the egg. A spokeswoman from the Vegetarian Society said: "For anyone struggling to become pregnant, avoiding soya products for a few days a month is worth a try if there is even a slim chance that it will help increase fertility." Oxfam pays $1m tsunami aid duty - BBC News

Saturday, June 18, 2005
OPINION I was deeply shocked to see this news item when I surfed onto the BBC News site. The first thought that came to my mind was, "How could they?". So when I read the article, I got to understand that 25 vehicles had been brought into the country and the Government of Sri Lanka has done this to prevent "market distortions" Oxfam is one of the world's biggest and recognized charity organizations and since the Tsunami of 26th Dec 2004, have been actively involved in aid and rebuilding programs across the affected areas. How could you charge a charity organization $1m, when they are helping the people of the country to rebuild and also distribute aid? Where is the right and wrong? So where does this $1m go to? Would part of it go to the people affected in the country? The answers to this I may never be able to answer, but I really think we should take a look at what's going on around us in this world. This type of thing is not only in Sri Lanka, but also other countries. I am not in a position to do anything at this moment, and all i could do is shake my head in dismay when I read about these type of situations. One should ask whether the vehicles brought into the country were for any other purpose besides reaching the poor communities through the tough terrain and bad roads.
