Oxfam pays $1m tsunami aid duty - BBC News

OPINION I was deeply shocked to see this news item when I surfed onto the BBC News site. The first thought that came to my mind was, "How could they?". So when I read the article, I got to understand that 25 vehicles had been brought into the country and the Government of Sri Lanka has done this to prevent "market distortions" Oxfam is one of the world's biggest and recognized charity organizations and since the Tsunami of 26th Dec 2004, have been actively involved in aid and rebuilding programs across the affected areas. How could you charge a charity organization $1m, when they are helping the people of the country to rebuild and also distribute aid? Where is the right and wrong? So where does this $1m go to? Would part of it go to the people affected in the country? The answers to this I may never be able to answer, but I really think we should take a look at what's going on around us in this world. This type of thing is not only in Sri Lanka, but also other countries. I am not in a position to do anything at this moment, and all i could do is shake my head in dismay when I read about these type of situations. One should ask whether the vehicles brought into the country were for any other purpose besides reaching the poor communities through the tough terrain and bad roads.
